About the Gallery

Galerie Kuzebauch was founded in Prague in 2012. It is run by Happy Materials, led by Ing. Lucie Havlová and MgA. Tomáš Hendrych. The gallery has long focused on contemporary studio glass and is the only gallery in the Czech Republic that systematically follows and presents art glass in its current forms.

Its programme presents established figures of the predominantly Czech glass scene alongside young artists whose work moves between fine art, design, craft and experiment.

It builds on the exceptional foundations of Czech glassmaking, which rest not only on tradition, quality material and craftsmanship, but also on the artists’ ability to keep working with glass in new ways, pushing its boundaries and seeking contemporary forms of expression.

International presentation of Czech glass is also an important part of the gallery’s work. Galerie Kuzebauch regularly takes part in shows, fairs and exhibition projects abroad – for example in London, Paris or Heidelberg – presenting the contemporary glass scene within a broader European context.

It strives for Czech studio glass to be seen not only as a continuation of an extraordinary craft tradition, but also as a living, contemporary and internationally relevant artistic language.

Why Kuzebauch?

The gallery’s name pays tribute to Václav Kuzebauch, the grandfather of Lucie Havlová, who spent his entire life in the Břevnov house where the gallery now resides. He was a passionate gardener, a Sokol member, a cyclist and sportsman, firmly rooted in the local community.

His life story spanned from the days of Austria-Hungary to a free Czech Republic, and it carries the experience of an era in which a name, origin or presumed affiliation
could become grounds for prejudice. Because of his distinctive surname, Václav Kuzebauch faced pressure from all sides: to Germans he was a Jew, to Jews a German. Many families shared a similar experience back then, and a number of people chose to change their names.

Galerie Kuzebauch takes the opposite path. Its name is a conscious decision not to hide this name, but to speak it again and carry it forward as part of family memory, local history and the contemporary cultural space. The fear and shame the family once felt is today
replaced by pride.
