This site-specific installation created by artist Lukáš Kalivoda is made up of a single whole comprised of three separate glass objects. Two of these engage in a form of mutual communication inside the gallery; the third is a solitary pillar installed in the gallery’s garden grounds. The objects serve to complement, in a highly organic sense, the impressions of refracted light shafts that make their way onto the light-sensitive layers of Kalivoda’s paper artworks hung on the gallery’s walls. All parts of the exhibition are unified via the mutual interaction of glass and light. Visitors to the exhibition will gain the opportunity to experience the displayed works on their own terms and at their own pace. But in order to gain a deeper appreciation, multiple visits and repeat experiences of the changing light conditions, are advised. The artist himself remains humble as to his aims: even if a single visitor is moved or influenced in a meaningful way, then Kalivoda will feel that his job is done.
The works of Lukáš Kalivoda exude a spirit of vivid experimentation. However, they are far from improvised. Rather, the artist adopts a highly precise and structured approach, with the finished art objects reflecting Kalivoda’s wealth of experiences and know-how with respect to the applied use of materials. The broken shards of sheet glass, presented without any additional processing, are carefully assembled into large structures by the artist. The cool, compact material, assembled from dangerously sharp irregularly shaped shards of glass, yields structures through which an astonishing light show passes, guaranteed to mesmerise and engross observers. Moreover, visitors themselves can impact the way in which the light interacts with the glass by their mere movement. This creates a true sense of immersion and interactivity, with viewers becoming not just part of the artworks but co-creators in the overall atmosphere of sublime contemplation.
In recent years, Lukáš Kalivoda’s artworks have served to offer a unique way of combining the vivacious nature of the art objects and paintings of noted Czech glass artist Vladimír Kopecký, along with the idea of “places that emphasise humanity,” as espoused by yet another top Czech name in the field, namely Václav Cigler. Such sources of inspiration, of course, lead to original and new ideas, with Kalivoda figuratively standing “on the shoulders of giants”. As Kalivoda approaches the start of his fourth decade, he has matured as an artist, albeit maintaining a catchy enthusiasm that continues to yield works imbued with a youthful gung-ho spirit. He is fascinated by the phenomena in his immediate orbit, which, in a spontaneous and unselfconscious way, is finding its way into his artworks – the result is undeniably unique, honest and engrossing.
Přestože díla Lukáše Kalivody vyznívají experimentálně a živelně, nevznikají na základě improvizace. Tvůrčím procesem je naopak precizní uvažování obohacené umělcovými bohatými zkušenostmi a dokonalou znalostí používaných materiálů. Nalámané surové pruty tabulového skla bez dalších úprav srůstají pod jeho rukama do rozměrných sestav. Chladnou kompaktní hmotou sestavenou z nebezpečně ostrých střepů s nepravidelnými hranami prochází světlo vybízející k jeho užaslému pozorování a dobrodružnému objevování. Diváci mihotavé světlo ovlivňují svými pohyby, noří se do něj a stávají se tak nejen součástí uměleckého díla, ale i spolutvůrci čisté až kontemplativní atmosféry.
Výtvarné práce Lukáše Kalivody z posledních let jedinečně propojují leccos z nespoutanosti objektů a obrazů Vladimíra Kopeckého s ideou „míst, kde se myslí na člověka“, spojenou s dílem dalšího klasika sklářského umění – Václava Ciglera. Neopisují od nich, originálním způsobem v nich nezávisle pokračují a myšlenkově se na ně napojují. Lukáš Kalivoda na prahu své čtyřicítky dospěl k umělecké a charakterové vyzrálosti, v jeho tvůrčím nakažlivém entuziasmu však stále probleskují jasné odrazy jeho mladistvé těžko kontrolovatelné divokosti. Kalivodu fascinují jevy kolem něj, což se spontánně a beze stopy kalkulu stále více prolíná do jeho uměleckých děl, která jsou jedinečná, upřímná a strhující.
