Lukáš Kalivoda (*1986) is a Czech glass artist and visual creator who in his work crosses the boundaries of the traditional conception of glass. He graduated from Prague's UMPRUM, where he was formed under the guidance of Vladimír Kopecký and Rony Plesl. His work connects glass, water, light and sound into installations and objects that are often processual, changeable and responsive to their environment. Kalivoda does not focus only on the resulting artefact, but on the very happening – his installations explore movement, natural phenomena and time as both material and medium.
A typical example is the series “Painting by Water”, where, using oil pigments on the water's surface, he creates images arising from controlled chance. His approach is intuitive, with an emphasis on playfulness, physical processes and openness of interpretation. The result is works that have both a fragile visual aesthetic and a deeper inner dimension. Kalivoda exhibits in the Czech Republic and abroad and has a long-standing interest in site-specific projects that naturally connect contemporary art with architecture and landscape.
