Matyas Pavlik (*1984) is a Czech glass artist whose work stems from a combination of traditional techniques and contemporary artistic language. He grew up in a family of glass artists – Vladimíra Klumparová and Michael Pavlík – and from childhood was surrounded by the international environment of art studios in Europe and America. He studied graphic design and the humanities in San Francisco and in Prague, where, under the guidance of his mother, he began to devote himself fully to working with glass, especially the technique of melted sculpture and later also cutting.
In his objects he connects organic and geometric forms and consistently explores the optical properties of glass – the play of light, colour and transparency. The result is striking sculptures and masks that work both aesthetically and symbolically. Pavlík's works have been exhibited in prestigious galleries in the USA and Europe, and his work today ranks among the acclaimed examples of contemporary studio glass with roots in the Czech tradition but with an international energy and language.
