Michaela Spružinová

Michaela Spružinová belongs to the younger generation of visual artists with a very specific artistic expression. She underwent her academic training in the Glass Studio of Ilja Bílek at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Ústí nad Labem, where she also worked for a short time as an assistant. In Ústí nad Labem she also studied curatorial studies, which she still does occasionally. She was no stranger to foreign studies either, having completed internships in Budapest or Jerusalem, Israel. Currently, she teaches in the Glass, Space, Object studio at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications of the Tomas Bata University in Zlín.

Michaela Spružina’s works are exciting narrative elements that showcase, mirror and communicate themes that resonate in contemporary society. They touch on them in a distinctive simplified form and a drawing shorthand that seems to touch on sources rooted perhaps somewhere in pop art or the grotesque. Michaela handles the material with extreme ease, subordinating it to his drawing and painting visuality, and, conversely, leaving aside any adoration or aristocratic exclusivity. She works with expressive ease and conviction, and he does not let the elaborated subject matter give off the laboriousness that lies behind each of the realisations. Often, the objects are the result of the slow and painstaking construction of a painting or object from individual threads or other elements pulled by hand from the glass. It is here that Michaela’s sparkling feminine emotionality and energy, which permeates all her work, shines through. The space and illusory image she creates in this way is a stage for her to reenact events suggested by her observation of life, our dreams and the harsh journalistic reflection that is part and parcel of learning about our world. Michaela Spružina’s work has been exhibited in many national and international exhibitions in renowned galleries and she is also the recipient of the Jury Prize at last year’s Biennale of Glass in Dublin, Ireland.
