Michal Motyčka

An artist and architect working with glass, mirroring and reflection. The gallery window becomes the work's dominant – space itself is part of the concept.

Michal Motyčka (*1974) is an artist and architect who has been using mirroring and reflection in his work for a long time, both in independent projects and in collaboration with Václav Cigler. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Czech Technical University in Prague, the Glass in Architecture studio of Marian Karel at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, a study internship at the Emil Přikryl School of Architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and a study internship in glass at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, USA. She is interested in the overlap between architecture and contemporary visual art. While mirroring and reflection are some of the main elements used in Motyčka’s work, they are not the only ones; the artist also works with light and its natural transformation, for example, always in the context of the site. Motyčka’s work deals with spatial relationships and the search for connections in human perception, but he also focuses on the environment in terms of scale, atmosphere and mood. His main theme is the concept of place, which is a response to a given space and the people in it.
