Petr Kavan (*1949) is a Czech sculptor, woodcarver and puppeteer. His work grows out of working with wood, figural sculpture and the puppet, but it gradually expanded to more monumental sculptural works in black granite and bronze. An important impulse for him was a long-term stay in southern India, where, in the traditional stonemason environment of the town of Mamallapuram, he developed his own sculptural language connecting personal experience, spiritual symbolism and the cultural memory of the place.
Alongside his free sculptural work he created an extensive set of wooden puppets and took part in several theatre and film projects. His works have been presented at solo and group exhibitions in the Czech Republic and abroad, including in Copenhagen, Hamburg, Paris, India and Prague. At Galerie Kuzebauch he had the solo exhibition A Brief Visit in 2019.
