Tora Urup (*1960) is a Danish glass designer and artist who works independently as well as in collaboration with glass manufactories, craftspeople and glassworks, primarily in the Czech Republic and Japan. She studied in Japan, Denmark and the United Kingdom, and her work has been presented at numerous international exhibitions. In her work she focuses especially on the archetype of the vessel, above all the bowl, which she strips of its ordinary utilitarian function and transforms into an object intended for a new kind of perception.
Characteristic of her is a sensitive engagement with structure, colour, the thickness of the glass and light. Using coloured layers and cut and polished surfaces, she creates optical illusions in which the inner space of the vessel seemingly separates from its outer form. Her objects thus open up questions of space, volume, the boundary between inner and outer, and the possibility of transforming a familiar object into a quiet, almost dreamlike visual experience. At Galerie Kuzebauch she presented the solo exhibition Themes and Variations in 2015.
