Maxim Velčovský (*1976) is one of the most distinctive figures of contemporary Czech design. He graduated from the Studio of Ceramics and Porcelain at Prague's UMPRUM, where he teaches today. In his work he works mainly with glass and porcelain, which he often places into new contexts of meaning. His work is characterised by exaggeration, a feel for everyday objects and the ability to transform a familiar shape into an object with a new symbolic and social statement.
In 2002, together with Jakub Berdych Karpelis, he co-founded the Qubus studio, which significantly contributed to popularising contemporary design in the Czech environment. Since 2011 he has been creative director of the company Lasvit. He has received a number of awards for his work, including Czech Grand Design – Designer of the Year. His works are represented in important collections in the Czech Republic and abroad, for example at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Neue Sammlung in Munich and mudac in Lausanne.
